I used this technique to get my eyes aligned over the ball: http://www.golf.com/golf/instruction/article/0,28136,1637455,00.html As it turns out, I needed to bend more from the hips to make the proper eye alignment happen. I’m now gripping down on my putter about 1 inch, and have marked a line on the grip for future reference. I seem [...]

As you know, I’m commited to improving my putting. My goal is to make >80% of putts from 4 feet or less (currently < 10%). 4 feet is how close I chip the ball, so more 4 foot putts sunk means more up-and-downs, and more pars. This is my strategy for improving my handicap. So [...]

Many of you have probably read elsewhere how important putting is to your final score. I’m become a real believer in this over the last six months, as my full swing has gotten much better but my score hasn’t. Think of it this way: most of the holes will be par 4′s. On the tee, you [...]

Shot 105 today at Spring Valley Golf Course. Did well on the front nine (49), not so good on the back nine (56). That 49 on the front nine is the lowest score I’ve shot for a regulation length nine holes (i.e. not counting par 3 executive courses), so I felt good about that. I [...]

Just wanted to make a note that I was hitting the driver very well during practice today. Started off hitting straight or slightly drawing, but not generating much power. These initial shots were short (100-150 yds) and low (~5-10 ft off the ground). After some thought, I realized that I was casting the club, i.e. [...]

Shot 57 at the par 36 back-nine today. Today was an experiment with not using the driver. Hit the 3 Hybrid on 7 out of 9 tees (the others were irons into par 3′s). Found only one fairway using this approach. Some balls were straight right, some hooked into the left rough, some hit fat. [...]

Worked on tee shots at the range today. My driver isn’t always accurate when I get on the course, so I’ve been working on developing a “go-to” club off tee, which I might shorter but straighter. This has typically been my 5 Wood, which is good but not 100% reliable. So now I’m working on [...]

I’ve been playing for a few weeks with the new Callaway HX Hot Bite Golf Ball. You may remember that I’ve been using the HX Hot since I started playing golf. That’s a great ball at a good price. Having heard good things about the new “Bite” version, I had to give it a try. [...]

Shot another nice 50 on the back nine this morning. Had no pars, just five (5) bogeys. Did not hit any greens in regulation (GIR). Hit only 3 of 9 fairways. The driver was not doing so well; hit it 6 times and only 3 shots were accurate, high and right (in the treeline but recoverable) [...]
Shot 50 (again!) at par 36
