Worked on tee shots at the range today. My driver isn’t always accurate when I get on the course, so I’ve been working on developing a “go-to” club off tee, which I might shorter but straighter. This has typically been my 5 Wood, which is good but not 100% reliable.
So now I’m working on tee shots with the 3 Hybrid. It has the same loft as the 5 Wood (19 degree) but is shorter and so easier to hit repeatedly solid. Off a low tee I can get about 180-200 yards with the range balls. More importantly, the left to right scatter in the shots is generally about plus or minus 10 yards. With driver I’m hitting 220-250 but with the ever-present chance of sending it somewhat right and being out of bounds or playing out from under trees.
Today on the range I hit only one 1 out of 10 or so shots on target with the driver. The rest were high and right, fading/slicing. I can never solve driver issues in the heat of play (exactly why I need the “go-to” club!), but later I realized that I wasn’t releasing the clubhead. Need to work on having my forearms crossover at the point of impact. The good news is that I was making solid impact every time, so I could have played dogleg rights on command…..
Regards,
NG
