Shot a disappointing 51 today. My ball striking has improved a lot recently, and it showed on the course. Hit 4 out of 7 fairways, and no lost balls.
However, I lost easily 8 strokes due to poor chipping / pitching. Will need to work on that in the weeks ahead…

NG

During my last round, was not able to get many chips close to the hole. I’ve been so focused on ball-striking improvement, that I hadn’t practiced chipping for several weeks, and it showed in my scoring. So back to chipping practice…
I’ve decided to approach this like putting, in the sense of making distance control the [...]

Just a note on chiping practice today.
Was intially havng trouble making solid contact. After reviewing my fundamentals, realized that i was moving my head during the stroke, to check out the results. So focused my eyes on the ball and the spot on the ball after impact, looking up a few seconds after [...]

On the practice green today, hit dozens of solid and on-line chips. Ball position off right heel or in middle of stance, depending on how much air-time I wanted on the ball.
Towards the end of the session, started hitting chips fat or blading them. Realized that I had the ball position almost to the left [...]

Just a quick note on my chipping.
Was practicing today and focused on “open hips” like I have been with my iron shots. This swing thought works well for iron shots, but results in inconsistent chipping distances. Keeping lower body relatively still and thinking “handle forward” works better for chipping.
I think is because “handle forward” sets [...]

Just a note that I was chipping really well on the practice green today. Holed three (3!) long chips in the space of half and hour, including one without about a foot of break.
What I’m learning is that my chipping is more accurate, both in line and speed, if I get the ball rolling as [...]

I’ve gotten reasonably good at making low running chips. This works great from the fairway or the fringe around the green; I generally hole one or two of these from short range (< 4 ft) during practice. Not so good if the shot will run through the rough, where it can get snagged or pushed [...]

I’ve found chipping accurately from short range (e.g. 1 foot off the green with the flag very close to the edge) to be a challenge. I either chip well past the flag or leave the ball in the rough.
Today I experimented with a new technique that I read about for short chips. Choke down on [...]

Practiced some more chipping today. I had lost the feel/motion for this in my last round, and was anxious to get it back. Discovered a couple keys to chipping it close:
1) Keep the head motionless during the shot. In this way, chip shots are like putting. Moving your head too soon to see the outcome [...]

Practiced putting and chipping today. I’ve been neglecting these for a few weeks, due to a hectic work schedule, and being focused on learning to hit the driver. Was rusty but got the feel back fast.
Lag putts were consistently fairly close to the hole, but none of them went in. Short putts felt really solid, [...]
