Was working on chip shots today.  Still bladed a few, so focused on holding a solid grip like with my full swing – no more wrist breakdwon = no more blading! Here’s my current chip shot routine: 1) Read the shot and determine landing point 2) Aim and setup 3) Solid grip 4) Weight on [...]

In a recent practice session, I bladed several chips and hit an equal number fat.  When I did make solid contact, by distance control was good, using the method outlined in a previous post on chipping.  So I concluded that my chipping stroke itself broke down. Realized later that I was unconsciously trying to hinge [...]

In my last round, my chipping was really poor.  Two-chipped more than once…and barely chipped onto the green a couple times, so far from the flag that a 3 putt was almost guaranteed… So I’m going full bore on learning how to chip close (< 4ft to the flag), so I can get up and [...]

Flubbed two (2) short chips in a row in a recent round.  This was after putting two (2) balls in the same lake… In retrospect I was distracted, and during setup forgot to put most of my weight on my left leg…Just need to remember this and my chipping will be fine. Hit the practice [...]

Since my chipping with only the 56 degree wedge has not held up well on the course, I’ve decided to try to what some people recommend, which is to use multiple clubs. I’ve selected sand wedge, 9 iron, an 7 iron.  These have an air time to roll time ratio of 1:1, 3:1, and 5:1 [...]

Shot a disappointing 51 today.  My ball striking has improved a lot recently, and it showed on the course.  Hit 4 out of 7 fairways, and no lost balls. However, I lost easily 8 strokes due to poor chipping / pitching.  Will need to work on that in the weeks ahead… Regards, NG

During my last round, was not able to get many chips close to the hole.  I’ve been so focused on ball-striking improvement, that I hadn’t practiced chipping for several weeks, and it showed in my scoring.  So back to chipping practice… I’ve decided to approach this like putting, in the sense of making distance control [...]

Just a note on chiping practice today. Was intially havng trouble making solid contact. After reviewing my fundamentals, realized that i was moving my head during the stroke, to check out the results. So focused my eyes on the ball and the spot on the ball after impact, looking up a few seconds after impact. [...]

On the practice green today, hit dozens of solid and on-line chips.  Ball position off right heel or in middle of stance, depending on how much air-time I wanted on the ball. Towards the end of the session, started hitting chips fat or blading them.  Realized that I had the ball position almost to the [...]

Just a quick note on my chipping. Was practicing today and focused on “open hips” like I have been with my iron shots.  This swing thought works well for iron shots, but results in inconsistent chipping distances.  Keeping lower body relatively still and thinking “handle forward” works better for chipping. I think is because “handle [...]
